I have not see a high probability of success with staying customer focused, as a growth designer, because the title itself implies seeding new customers, and not existing ones.
CX still keeps you customer focused but growth design doesn't allow for the same holistic approach you get with a customer in Product Design.

I'm a craft traditionalist so I don't advocate for designers trying to work in this role. You will lose a lot of your Product Design skills if you do.
