Choosing to like the things we find uncomfortable
It's easy to give up in the face of challenges if we focus on the negative aspects. It's harder but much more rewarding to like the things we find uncomfortable as we reach for our goals.

On the weekends, I usually go on a long run on the trails. Every run has its challenges, such as steep climbs, heat, long stretches alone, fatigue, or simply not feeling up to it. There’s always some obstacle that can derail me, that is, if I let it.
The truth is, I have a choice.
Instead of resisting the obstacle, I can lean into it. I can appreciate it. I can even like it.
It’s easy to give up, especially when we’re not in the mood to do the thing. But it takes intentionality to stay the course and finish strong.
That’s why Janelle Smiley’s words in Training for the Uphill Athlete stood out to me:
“I decided to surrender myself to the circumstances—to these strangers in our group, to the mountains, to the variable conditions and harsh weather. I decided to like things that were otherwise uncomfortable or frustrating. Instead of turning my back to the wind, I faced into it, making me feel alive... I continually made the decision to find the good in each situation. I had to—it’s what carried me through.”
Janelle’s story highlights a subtle but powerful mindset: choosing to like the things we find uncomfortable.
Instead of letting her situation dictate her experience, Janelle used intention to shape it. Notice the words she repeats: “I decided… I developed… I chose… I continually made the decision…”
She didn’t let the storm, the cold, or even an abrasive teammate control her outcome. She chose to:
make the best of her experience
see the good in every situation
reject negative thoughts
embrace discomfort as fuel
This mindset shifts us from being rigid and reactive to being flexible and purposeful.
So the next time you face a challenge, don’t turn away.
Choose to lean into it.
Choose to embrace it.
Choose to find the good in it.
So you can become unstoppable.
